As a newborn photographer, I have spent countless hours swaddling, soothing, and photographing sleepy little miracles. Here's the secret: the best photos come from the calmest and sleepiest babies - and calm babies usually have parents who've mastered a few clever tricks. Whether you're a first-time parent or just looking for a smoother ride, here are 5 newborn hacks I have picked up both behind the lens and in the trenches of motherhood.
1. Swaddle for sleep
Baby is finally out and so happy to move their arms and legs! At least, that's what you think. Little do you know, that this can be alarming for newborns. They have been sleeping in such a tiny space for the past 40 weeks that they are comforted by being swaddled, so, go ahead, and swaddle them for those naps! Remember, firm, but not tight!
2. Layered Changing Pad Covers
Stack two or three covers on your changing pad with a reusable or disposable underpad liner in between each one. When the top cover gets messy or inevitably peed on, take the top one off, throw away the disposable liner and viola, all ready for baby again!
3. Bounce on an Exercise Ball
If you have a birthing ball or exercise ball, keep it! Bouncing gently while holding your baby can soothe even the fussiest newborn baby. It's like a magic motion reset.
4. Diaper Change Pee Trick
For baby boys, try one of two things. First, swipe a cool wet wipe under baby's belly button before opening up the diaper. Second, open the diaper slowly, allowing the cool air in but not taking it off completely, just hover for a few seconds. The cool feeling often triggers a preemptive pee - saving both your sanity and your shirt!
5. Tummy Time on Your Chest
If your baby hates tummy time on the floor, try lying back and letting them rest on your chest for tummy time. It's cozy, promotes bonding, and still builds neck strength because they are trying to look into your eyes!
Final thoughts from behind the lens
I've seen these hacks work wonders - not just for photo sessions, but for every day parenting. When your baby is calm, you are too. When you are calm, everything feels a little more possible. So here's to fewer tears, more sleep, and maybe even a perfect photo or two. You've got this, mama.
